Study confirms health benefits of higher ethanol blends

A recent study conducted in Brazil found that increasing the amount of fossil petrol and reducing ethanol in petrol blends led to increased particulate matter in emissions, which could result in cardiovascular and respiratory problems.

The study, by the University of Sao Paolo’s Physics Institute, was conducted when Brazil was adjusting ethanol blends in petrol as a result of market prices. It determined that pollutants increased as fuel blends decreased ethanol in favor of gasoline.

Researcher Paulo Artexo said the “results reinforce the need for public policies to encourage the use of biofuels, as they clearly show that the public loses in health what they save at the pump when opting for gasoline.”
