How a more pragmatic approach to biofuels would boost EU competitiveness
There does not have to be a trade-off between achieving Europe’s goals for reducing transport emissions and creating a more resilient economy.
ePURE Director General David Carpintero writes in EURACTIV: "The latest EU policy mantra is ‘competitiveness’ – a word that was recently brought to new prominence thanks to a long-awaited report from Mario Draghi and one that will continue to be chanted by incoming European Commissioners and MEPs in the coming months.
"When it comes to certain EU Green Deal policies, competitiveness is often talked about as part of a false dichotomy – as if Europe can either achieve its climate goals or be competitive, but not both. But there does not have to be a trade-off: Europe can boost its competitiveness in ways that achieve its Green Deal ambitions.
"This is especially true when it comes to biofuels policy, which – as Draghi’s report states – should be making more of strategic assets such as ethanol biorefineries that produce food, feed, renewable fuel and other important co-products."
